Source:
California Department of Public Health

Years Available:
 Kindergarten: 2000-2011, 2016-17

7th Grade: 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17

Why are these variables important to measure?

Kindergarten Immunization Rate

California state law requires that children entering kindergarten show proof of immunization for five standard vaccines. High rates of vaccine coverage protect schoolchildren from contracting and spreading vaccine-preventable diseases. Under state law, parents or guardians who do not wish to vaccinate their children must submit a written statement from a licensed physician. The state of California may also grant exemptions to homeless children or children in foster care, allowing them to enroll in school before completing the vaccine requirements.

Although vaccine coverage throughout the United States is generally very high, California has lower rates than the national average and has seen the reemergence of preventable diseases in recent years due to lower coverage rates. Rates of immunization can be analyzed on a neighborhood level in order to identify any geographic pockets of lower immunization rates who may be at a higher risk for preventable disease outbreaks.

7th Grade Immunization Rate

California state law requires that children entering the 7th grade show proof of immunization for two standard vaccines.
