Characteristics of Renters, Homeowners & Houseless Angelenos
This dashboard provides a socioeconomic snapshot of Angelenos across housing types—homeowners, renters, and people experiencing homelessness, both sheltered and unsheltered. It highlights key differences by race and ethnicity, age, and income using the latest year of data available for each group. Race & Ethnicity
- People who identify as Black or African American are significantly overrepresented among houseless residents compared to those in rental or owner-occupied housing. 38% of sheltered and 23% of unsheltered people experiencing homelessness identified as Black, compared to just 8% of the county’s overall population
- People who identify as Asian/Pacific Islander and White are overrepresented among people living in owner-occupied housing compared to people in rental housing and houseless people. Notably, 19% of people living in owner-occupied housing identified as Asian/Pacific Islander compared to 15% of all residents and just 2% of houseless residents.
- People who identify as Hispanic/Latino are overrepresented among renters compared to homeowners and houseless individuals. 56% of people living in rental housing identified as Hispanic/Latino compared to 42% of people in owner-occupied housing, 48% of unsheltered people and 43% of sheltered people experiencing homelessness.
Age Distribution
- People of “prime working age” (ages 25-54) are overrepresented among all groups except homeowners. Most notably, 68% of unsheltered people experiencing homelessness fall into that age group compared to 43% of all residents. Adults ages 55-61 are also overrepresented among unsheltered people experiencing homelessness.
- People ages 62 and older are overrepresented among those living in owner-occupied housing, compared to renters and unhoused residents.
Median Income
- In 2024, the median household income for renters in Los Angeles County was $68,810—just over half that of homeowners ($127,595).
